The fascinating gnawa music that originates from the era of slavery in Morocco is still alive, as the young Guembri player Asmaa Hamzaoui impressively conveys. Playing the guembri - a plucked lute played in a percussive style - is traditionally reserved for men. Asmaa Hamzaoui and her group Bnat Timbouktou are the first all female Gnawa group to lead the way in promoting equality and preserving traditions and spiritual practices in today's Morocco. Prior to her Austrian concert debut on October 16th at Porgy & Bess, Salam Orient invites the young musician to an artist talk, moderated by the Syrian-Austrian writer Luna Almousli.
