Exhibition Market-Mary

Euro, dirham, manat, shilling or franc: currencies are not only means of payment, but also tell stories about a state or an alliance of states with their images and symbols, they construct their identity and refer to political realities.

The Exhibition "Markt-Marie" is dedicated to the design of banknotes, raising questions about representation, power relations and the interaction of politics and economics. In a participatory wall work, Mustapha Akrim invites visitors to dig up facets of the contemporary history of money – from the representation of workers on the Moroccan dirham to the neocolonial currency of the franc introduced in the Central African region – through the act of scraping.
